The European Commission has approved Poland’s request for funding under the European Union’s SAFE programme, unlocking major defence investments and marking what Polish authorities describe as a turning point for national and European security.

According to the Polish government, Poland will be the largest beneficiary of the programme, receiving nearly PLN 200 billion. A significant share of the funding, up to 80%,  is expected to go directly to Polish companies and the domestic defence industry.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk called the decision historic, stating:

This is a watershed moment. SAFE was in part conceived and initiated by Poland. From the very first day of our government, we did everything to ensure that NATO’s eastern border became an important task for all of Europe

Strengthening Defence and the Economy

Funds from the SAFE programme will support the modernisation of Poland’s armed forces, the development of the defence industry, and the strengthening of national security infrastructure. Investments will also include projects linked to protecting the eastern border, including the East Shield initiative.

Government officials stress that the programme is not only a security initiative but also a major economic development tool. With most funding directed to the domestic industry, it is expected to stimulate investment, innovation, and growth across the Polish economy.

Highlighting the scale of the initiative, the Prime Minister noted that the funding allocated to Poland exceeds the entire defence budgets of some major European countries.

What is SAFE?

SAFE (Security Action for Europe) is a large-scale European defence financing programme designed to strengthen military capabilities and the defence industry across Europe. It provides funding, mainly through long-term loans, to help countries invest in equipment, joint procurement, and security infrastructure.
