Tennis is often described as an individual sport, driven by personal rankings, solo performances, and individual glory. But every now and then, a tournament comes along that challenges this perception. The United Cup is one of them, and Poland’s historic victory in the 2026 is a perfect example of why teamwork still matters.
An unofficial mixed-team world championship, the United Cup brings together national teams made up of both women and men. Each tie consists of women’s singles, men’s singles, and mixed doubles, meaning success depends not on one star player but on collective effort, communication, and trust.
This year, Poland finally turned persistence into triumph!
United Cup 2026: How Poland Earned The Victory
After finishing runners-up in both the 2024 and 2025 editions, the Polish team defeated Switzerland 2–1 in the final at Sydney’s Ken Rosewall Arena on Sunday, January 11, securing the country’s first United Cup title.
The final began with a tough challenge. Switzerland took the early lead as Belinda Bencic, who had been in outstanding form throughout the tournament, defeated World No. 2 Iga Świątek 3–6, 6–0, 6–3. It was a setback, but not the end of the story.
Poland responded with composure and determination. Hubert Hurkacz, competing in his first tournament in seven months after knee surgery, delivered under pressure by defeating Stan Wawrinka 6–3, 3–6, 6–3. His performance not only leveled the tie but kept Poland’s hopes alive when it mattered most.
Everything came down to the mixed doubles. In a confident and controlled display, Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zieliński overcame Switzerland’s Bencic and Jakub Paul 6–4, 6–3, sealing the championship and completing a flawless mixed doubles run for the tournament.
The emotional weight of the victory was clear. Reflecting on the win, Iga Świątek emphasized the importance of the team:
“Finally, we have made it, third-time lucky… not lucky, because we worked really hard. […] This year I truly felt it was a team effort. Even when my singles performance wasn’t perfect, the support from the team lifted me up and kept me believing until the end.”
More Than a Sporting Success
We’ve long believed that Polish software developers rank among the world’s best, and that teamwork is one of Poland’s defining strengths. In sports, we’ve often pointed to Polish volleyball players as a benchmark for sustained excellence built on structure and collaboration. Now, tennis joins that list.
Poland’s United Cup victory is a reminder that the same principles apply across disciplines: when individual talent is aligned with trust, resilience, and shared responsibility, exceptional results follow, whether on the tennis court or in complex IT projects.
