Europe’s space ambitions are entering a new era, one defined not only by scientific discovery and commercial innovation, but also by security, resilience and strategic autonomy. Reflecting this shift, the European Space Agency has selected Warsaw as the home of its new ESA Security Centre.

The decision is significant on several levels. It represents the first permanent ESA centre established in one of the Agency’s newer member states rather than in the countries that founded ESA in 1975. It also acknowledges Poland’s rapid transformation into one of Europe’s fastest-growing space economies and positions Warsaw at the heart of Europe’s evolving security architecture.

Far more than another administrative office, the new centre will serve as a hub where space technologies, cybersecurity, resilience, AI and dual-use innovation converge to address some of the most pressing challenges facing Europe today.

Why the New Security Centre Matters for the Space Sector?

For decades, ESA has been known primarily for scientific missions, Earth observation satellites, launch technologies and international cooperation in space exploration. Yet the geopolitical landscape has changed dramatically over the past several years.

Space infrastructure has become essential for almost every aspect of modern society. Navigation systems guide aircraft and ships. Satellite communications enable emergency response and military operations. Earth observation satellites monitor natural disasters, climate change and critical infrastructure. Governments, businesses and citizens increasingly depend on assets orbiting hundreds of kilometres above Earth.

These systems have also become more vulnerable. Cyberattacks, electronic interference, anti-satellite capabilities, hybrid threats and the weaponisation of space have transformed security into one of Europe’s highest priorities. Rather than treating security as a separate issue, ESA is integrating it into the future development of European space capabilities.

The new ESA Security Centre will be a cornerstone of this strategy. Instead of duplicating work already carried out at existing ESA establishments, the Warsaw centre will develop new expertise focused on protecting European space infrastructure and strengthening the resilience of space-based services.

Why ESA Chose Poland for its Security Centre?

We recently covered why Poland is one of the world’s most strategic hubs for cybersecurity teams. In the article, our CEO, Wiktor Tarnawski, pointed out several factors, most notably a deep cybersecurity ecosystem, global recognition, and knowledge backed by experience. These factors, along with many others mentioned in the article, form the basis for this decision, but for ESA, there is also another side to the story.

When Poland joined ESA in 2012, its space sector was relatively small. While the country had a strong scientific tradition and engineering talent, it lacked the industrial ecosystem found in long-established European space powers such as France, Germany or Italy.

Today, Poland is home to more than 70 companies operating across the space sector. Polish firms contribute components for satellites, robotic systems, electronics, software, telecommunications, optics and advanced manufacturing. Universities and research institutes, like POLSA, have expanded their space-related programmes, while ESA Business Incubation Centres across the country have helped launch dozens of innovative startups.

Poland’s growing capabilities were also showcased last year when Polish astronaut Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski travelled to the International Space Station aboard Axiom Mission 4, becoming only the second Pole in history to fly into space.

But the strongest validation of Poland’s growing position in the European space sector comes directly from ESA itself. In an interview with Defence24, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher emphasized that Poland’s selection reflects its rapid transformation and long-term ambition:

“Poland is now moving from being a relatively new member of the ESA community to a much more mature player, with growing expertise and a strong desire to engage further. What I particularly appreciate about Poland is its ambitious, forward-looking strategy. There is a clear determination to modernise the country rapidly and decisively.”

The Search for the Right Location: Warsaw

Choosing Poland as the host country was only the first step. ESA and the Polish government then faced another important question: where should the new centre be located? Several Polish cities expressed interest in hosting the project, and each candidate offered compelling advantages.

  • Kraków presented its internationally recognised academic institutions and thriving technology sector.
  • Wrocław highlighted its engineering excellence and rapidly expanding innovation ecosystem.
  • Gdańsk pointed to its strengths in digital technologies, maritime industries and cybersecurity.
  • Rzeszów demonstrated its unique expertise in aerospace manufacturing through one of Europe’s most important aviation clusters.

But Warsaw proposed something broader: a complete ecosystem capable of supporting an institution operating at the intersection of science, government, security and international cooperation. In the end, Warsaw offered the strongest overall package.

Announcing the decision during a conference at the Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw, Josef Aschbacher said:

“The aim was to establish an ESA Centre in Poland that would work for the benefit of Polish industry and defence. It is therefore with great pleasure that I announce that we have jointly chosen Warsaw as the location for this centre.”

Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski welcomed the announcement:

“Warsaw has been selected as the location of the new European Space Agency technology centre. The capital will host an institution of strategic importance for the security of Europe. This is an important decision for the development of Poland’s space sector, future technologies and new jobs. I would like to thank everyone from the space community in Warsaw and the Mazovia region for their joint efforts to bring the ESA centre to Warsaw.”

Warsaw ultimately stood out because it combines all the elements needed to support a strategic ESA facility in one place. As Poland’s capital, it brings together key government institutions responsible for security, defence and digital policy, alongside leading research organisations such as the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences and top technical universities.

The city is also Poland’s largest technology hub, with a strong concentration of companies specialising in AI, cybersecurity, cloud computing and advanced software. Combined with its experience hosting international organisations, including Frontex, excellent transport links and access to a highly skilled international workforce, Warsaw offered the strongest overall environment.

A New Chapter for the Polish Space Sector

Hosting the ESA Security Centre is a symbolic achievement, but it will also help strengthen Poland’s position as one of Europe’s leading destinations for engineering and cybersecurity talent.

The new centre is expected to attract international experts, create high-skilled jobs and generate new opportunities for Polish engineers, cybersecurity specialists and researchers. It will also deepen cooperation between ESA, universities, startups and technology companies, accelerating innovation in areas such as AI, secure software, satellite systems and critical infrastructure protection.

For international companies, the decision is another signal that Poland is becoming a strategic location for building advanced engineering and cybersecurity teams. For Warsaw, it reinforces its position as one of Central Europe’s leading technology hubs. And for Poland, it marks the transition from participating in Europe’s space programmes to helping shape the technologies that will secure Europe’s future in space.
